-What ties all these works together for you?
Benjamin: there was no real plan behind it, I guess i was just being productive, but what ties them together is that most of it is not standard repertoire, but a repertoire that i feel the audience must not miss! it is all absolutely great great composing for the violin, but all of the composers are of strongest caliber.

-What drives you to record?
Benjamin: perfection….i love to document my best and most polished and thought-through interpretation of a work for the world to be listened to - becausethese works deserve perfection, and classical music gives us an idea of how beautiful the world could be…...
What kinds of "similar" American repertoire have you explored? And how long can it be before Chinese composers begin to be heard from?
next to the Korngold and Kreisler Concertos (who became both americans after being viennese) i like to perform the William Bolcom Violinconcerto which I find a very classy piece. of course I play the Gershwin tunes, but the most important composers i got across were all those giants of Jazz - my second huge musical passion. Some Names? Chick Corea, John Scofield, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Michael Brecker, to name just the most famous ones. I truly loved Jazz all my life and play about 15 Jazzconcerts every year with most incredible musicians.

-How high has the bar been raised for students wanting to become professional violinists purely in terms of technical virtuosity?
Benjamin: the problem is: Technique is so immensely important for a really good violinist but in spite of investing all that energy in it, your main interest as a musician has to be somewhere else: in art, in reflections of life, in scores, in music history, in biographies, in orchestral thinking, in form! this is what students forget when they spend 8 hour a day on their technique. I like Ivry Gitlis´forword in his booklet of his 24 caprices of Paganini- CD: " dear Students, stop imitating your computers!"
-Have you ever considered forming a band like Jan Vogler's Knights?
Benjamin: not yet, since i don't have conducting ambitions and are still so busy just with playing my fiddle well…..but i have a group in Salzburg which is called Salzburg Strings - and we do sometimes odd stuff like Gulda Violinconcerto!
