Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was commissioned to write six piano quartets, but sales of the first two were slow. Therefore none were written afterwards, which from today's point of view is an immeasurable omission, if one considers what brilliant highlights the two existing piano quartets represent in their genre - no, in the entire chamber music. Quasi piano concertos, then again perfect chamber music with many wonderful arias for the strings make their perfect form marvels of shared musical dialogue.
We have now spent several seasons with our ensemble performing this repertoire and were pleased to receive the Opus Classic Award for our CD recording in 2021.
Between the two piano quartets, we place perhaps the best of Mozart's 32 violin sonatas: the one in B-flat major, K. 454, which he wrote as a "sonata for piano and violin" for the celebrated Italian violinist Regina Strinasacci and also premiered with her. However, he was so pressed for time that he played the piano part from memory, or rather improvised, due to the lack of written notes. There is no better way to write for the violin: this is the feeling I get when playing this great music! Benjamin Schmid
